What To Do if Your Roof Springs a Leak

Roof Repair

Even when you take all the preventive measures that you can think of, sometimes accidents happen. One day, you are relaxing in the comfort of your home, and the next you notice a water stain that’s spreading across the ceiling. Unfortunately, roof leaks are inevitable, no matter how much you take care of your roof.

However, you don’t have to let a roof leak ruin your day. In fact, there are a couple of ways you can reduce water damage, minimize the cost, and most importantly, prevent future leaks.

Minimize Water Damage

If you discover an active leak in your roof, you should do your best to minimize water damage. For that, you can either move or put a plastic covering over anything which can get damaged by water. That includes your electronics, furniture, and other valuable items. You can even remove these items from the affected area, as long as you don’t put your life in danger while doing so.

Contain the Water

Once your items are safe and sound, you need to put a bucket or a similar container beneath the leak to catch water. If there are splashes, you can put some fabric on the bottom of the bucket to absorb them. Or, you can pin a string to the ceiling near the leak and connect it to your container. That way, water will have a safe path directly into the bucket.

It’s also important to mention that if your wall’s paint is bubbling, it might hold water. So be sure to puncture the bubble to release any leftover water into the bucket. And remember that if you can’t contain the water that’s coming in through the leak, you should immediately call a roofing contractor.

Remove Excess Water

After you manage to control the leak, you must remove excess water and any items that have been damaged. You should note that water will not only stain your furniture but can also promote the growth of mold, so it is best to do this quickly.

You can use a pump or vacuum to get rid of excess water. If your carpet is soaked, make sure to pull it away and expose both of its sides to circulating air until it dries completely.

Call Your Insurance Company

If your home has sustained heavy water damage, you should contact your insurance company. While not every insurer covers damage from leaky roofs, it’s still worth calling your agent in order to determine what is actually covered by your insurance.

Contact a Roofing Contractor
